Laureate’s COVID-19 Response

How has Laureate responded to the COVID-19 pandemic?

The health and well-being of our students, faculty and staff has been, and remains, our first priority.

We followed the guidance of the World Health Organization and local ities to determine the most appropriate actions to take and we continue to do so.

For many years, Laureate has had the capacity to deliver high-quality, digital learning experiences and we acted quickly to leverage our existing technologies and learning platforms to serve students outside of the traditional classroom setting. In addition to transitioning to fully online delivery, we also effectively moved other essential functions, including student support services and marketing and enrollment to a fully remote environment.

We have communicated with our students, faculty and staff regularly throughout the pandemic to ensure they remain informed of our response. In March 2020, our President and CEO, Eilif Serck-Hanssen, published this letter to Laureate students, and followed up with another letter in June 2020, which you can read here.

What is the status of program delivery at Laureate universities now?

While Laureate universities continue to deliver learning online, they are also focused on planning for a safe return to campus, when appropriate to do so. Most of our universities will adopt a phased approach, prioritizing classes that require the use of labs and other physical resources. 

Consistent with local regulations and health ity recommendations, we will implement a range of precautions to protect the health and safety of our students, faculty and staff, to ensure the safe return of activity on our campuses.

What is the role of education during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Education has never been more important. We will not get through the challenges of the global pandemic without the expertise, technical skills, experience, and humanity of an educated workforce, equipped to lead us through the most complex challenges of our collective future. We remain committed to all our students, as we graduate the world’s future leaders.

In addition, while times like this test our ability to adapt, respond, innovate, and change, they also present opportunities. We’ve witnessed this, as Laureate students and faculty have responded to the pandemic and demonstrated their commitment to addressing the various challenges it has presented. Examples of stories from our institutions include:

Brazil

  • UNIFACS medical students assisted tens of thousands of Brazilians with medical advice via a coronavirus inquiry helpline. Fifth and sixth-year students provided free phone consultations to callers with COVID-19 symptoms or other related health conditions. Phone assessments helped determine people’s need to attend a medical clinic or hospital. Read more here.

Chile

  • Andrés Bello University Commercial Engineering students helped entertain, encourage creativity and stimulate children’s imagination and reduce their reliance on digital devices during COVID-19 quarantine. They provided educational games, audio-visual materials and craft guides for children aged three to 10 years. The students created the online resources to assist parents looking for activities to inspire their young ones. Read more here.

Honduras

  • UNITEC engineers and health sciences professionals designed a mechanical lung ventilator prototype produced using 3D printers, to provide respiratory assistance to COVID-19 patients. The design was a cost-effective option for treating patients, with an estimated production cost of around US$3,000 per unit (commercial units with similar specifications cost upwards of US$25,000).   • UNITEC students established a non-profit organization following the outbreak of COVID-19 to assist at-risk elderly residents living in retirement 合约交易所_全球十大合约交易平台_Mybihomes with insufficient resources. They collected donations of cleaning products, personal hygiene items, food and monetary contributions. Read more here.

Mexico

  • UVM’s Psychology faculty offered free phone counseling services to distressed citizens following the outbreak of COVID-19. Twenty-one professors and students in seven cities assisted callers with COVID-19 related concerns, for example, students seeking support and parents requesting activities for their children while at 合约交易所_全球十大合约交易平台_Mybihome in quarantine.
  • UVM’s veterinary hospital staff and students in Mexico City cared for pets following the COVID-19 outbreak and the subsequent closure of the hospital in March. Veterinary students cared for stray animals at 合约交易所_全球十大合约交易平台_Mybihome. Read more here.

Peru

  • UPN students and a professor designed a smart locker for hospital change rooms that disinfects hospital uniforms using chemicals and ultraviolet light (reducing the risk of cross-contamination in uniforms and personal clothing of frontline healthcare professionals). The design was highly commended at the 2020 Global Grad Show during Dubai Design Week – the most internationally recognized design event for innovative social impact proposals from university students and graduate designers around the world.   • UPN students also designed a trailer, which attaches to motorcycles and disinfects products being transported from stores to 合约交易所_全球十大合约交易平台_Mybihomes, therefore minimizing the spread of COVID-19. When products (such as supermarket items, online retail purchases, food deliveries) are placed inside the trailer, a nebulization process is carried out (with organic substances and ultraviolet light). U.S.

  • Walden University donated 650 tablets, 300 learning kits (activity guides, books, Play Doh, classroom supplies) and 80 backpacks filled with food and hygiene products to students from Baltimore City Public Schools.
